A striking 1960s Palestinian thobe in the six-branch style, featuring motifs associated with the coastal plains of Yafa and its surrounding villages. The embroidery echoes designs found on thobes from Salama and Beit Dajan, with a rich palette of blue and red accented by pops of emerald green.
The dress is adorned with delicate rose motifs. The edges are finished with Mooj al-Bahar, or “waves of the sea,” a distinctive wave motif worked using rasmeh, a chain-stitch technique. The embroidered edges are finished with decorative piping along the neckline and cuffs.
The qabbah features the same intricate embroidery and color palette, completing the composition of the dress. The base fabric is a lightweight polyester, and the sleeves feature snap closures at the cuffs.
Given its design and period, the thobe was likely made in a Palestinian refugee camp by an embroiderer from the coastal plains, such as Yafa or one of its surrounding villages.
