1960s–1970s Hand-Embroidered Purse from Jerusalem

This exceptional tote was handmade in Jerusalem during the 1960s–1970s and purchased by a traveler visiting the city. It was never used and has been carefully preserved, remaining in beautiful vintage condition.

Hand-embroidered on hand-loomed cotton, the bag features elegant hand-carved olive wood handles and reflects the highest level of craftsmanship produced by historic Palestinian tatreez co-operatives. During the 1960s–1970s, these women-led co-ops were producing some of the finest and most technically accomplished embroidery of the post-Nakba era.

The design depicts a line of camels walking among palm trees, with dates (balah) hanging from the branches; a joyful celebration of Bedouin culture and a deep connection to the land. 🌴🐪 The embroidery appears on both sides of the bag, with alternating colors.

Tatreez created by co-operatives during this period is widely regarded as the highest quality of its time, representing a convergence of skill, cultural knowledge, and collective labor. Pieces like this stand as enduring evidence of Palestinian artistic excellence, lineage, and cultural continuity.
