Nearly 100 years old, this antique skirt is a rare gem of Syrian folk dress. Originating from Palmyra’s Sukhneh oasis, it features asymmetrical silk cross-stitch embroidery with motifs of palm trees, Roman columns, and chevrons — designs that reflect the environment of Palmyra while also protecting the wearer from the evil eye.
Part of a traditional bridal trousseau, the skirt was meant to be worn for life. The adjustable drawstring waistband allows it expand with a woman’s changing body. How amazing is that?
The base is woven Syrian habar silk, embroidered with vibrant neon silk threads that make the piece truly extraordinary.
