Vintage Midcentury Thobe from Deir Al-Balah, Gaza
This gorgeous midcentury thobe from Gaza is a true relic. We are honored to offer such a vital piece of Palestinian history to our community in diaspora.
Dating to the 1950s to 1960s, this thobe features dense hand embroidery throughout. The small birds along the lower panel are especially tender and striking.
This was a special occasion thobe, likely belonging to a married woman, not intended as a wedding or henna dress.
Pieces like this often left Gaza during the 1960s and 1970s, when displacement and economic hardship forced many Palestinians to sell their garments. Tourists and collectors acquired them in that context, and many have remained outside of Palestine ever since. Today, places like Deir al Balah, where garments like this once lived and moved, have been devastated, making surviving pieces all the more significant as cultural records.
There is visible wear consistent with its age. The black cotton base shows some fading, and in a few areas the embroidery has minor damage. Please refer to photos of the shoulder area.
Please note the neck opening is quite small, measuring 5” across. Pieces like this are rare and should be handled with care.
This thobe has traveled far to find its way home to a Palestinian who will care for and preserve it.
Measurements laid flat
Armpit to armpit 18.5”
Neck opening 5” across
Shoulder to hem 48”
Condition
This is an older thobe and shows wear consistent with its age.
The white scarf and necklace are also available for purchase.
✨ PLEASE NOTE ✨
