Antique Sukhneh Coat on Habar from Palmyra 🌴

This stunning duster style overcoat is a rare antique from the 1920s and 1930s, made from habar, a Syrian silk rayon blend with a liquid like drape that feels incredibly soft and buttery. The coat is hand embroidered in cross stitch, featuring traditional motifs inspired by Roman pillars and palm trees, echoing the beauty of Palmyra.

In Sukhneh, an oasis just west of Palmyra, women were renowned for their extraordinary embroidery traditions, often stitching almost exclusively in rich reds. Coats like this were densely embroidered with silk geometric and floral patterns, including bold chevron panels and symbolic palm tree or tree of life motifs. The satin finish of habar made counted cross stitch especially difficult, requiring immense skill. Some women embroidered by memory, while others used embroidery canvas that was later dissolved and removed thread by thread. These garments were deeply tied to wedding traditions, as brides spent years creating ensembles that became treasured heirlooms passed down through generations.

Our model is 5'8" and wears a size 8 Medium. This overcoat layers beautifully over your favorite dress or with jeans, as styled here.

A true relic and one of our shop favorites, we hope to reunite it with someone who will cherish and care for it for years to come.

Condition:
Despite its age, this piece remains in excellent antique condition. It has been well loved, with a few small holes that can be easily repaired, along with signs of past mending, true to coats like these, which were often worn as everyday treasures. Some of the embroidery has dissolved as seen in the pictures. This is expected as this piece is an antique.

We’ve had the garment professionally cleaned and it’s ready to wear and enjoy.
