A gorgeous antique atlas silk qumbaz woven in a striking Kamakh pattern, characterized by elegant woven stripes and the luminous sheen of fine silk. Kamakh was a luxurious silk textile prized throughout Bilad ash-Sham, and commonly used for finely tailored garments such as qumbaz, jubbas, the shoulder panels of fine thobes, and other formal attire.
This celebrated textile was known by different names across the region. In the Tulkarm area, the pattern was affectionately called “gold in its bag” (ذهب بكيسه), while in Aleppo it was known as “the waterwheel” (الناعورة), inspired by the iconic waterwheels of Hama, one of Syria’s enduring symbols.
Qumbaz were worn throughout northern Palestine, including Nazareth, and across Syria, reflecting the region’s shared textile traditions and craftsmanship. They were typically worn over a simple white dress and, on occasion, could also be draped over the head as an elegant outer covering. The smooth, lustrous atlas silk and refined Kamakh pattern make this a beautiful example of the historic dress traditions of Bilad ash-Sham.
