1970s Vintage Co-op Thobe (Medium)

sold out

This rare and beautiful thobe was made in a Palestinian co-op in the 1970s. The tatreez work is truly exceptional. It features ¾ sleeves in a soft cotton linen, with a back zipper and gentle pleating that create a flattering, fitted silhouette.

We especially love the Saru motif, the cypress tree from Beit Dajan. The embroidery is worked in rich red DMC cotton thread alongside gold wire, giving the surface striking depth and luminosity.

Pieces like this were produced in women run cooperatives, where Palestinian women generated income for their families through embroidery. These co-ops played a vital role in sustaining both livelihood and tradition, adapting tatreez into more contemporary silhouettes for Palestinians in diaspora. At the time, the traditional thobe was often seen as formal/old fashioned, so garments like this, along with purses and home textiles, offered a more modern way to wear and live with embroidery.

We are honored to share this piece of tatreez history with our community. A true collector’s item, it reflects the remarkable craftsmanship and high quality work produced through these cooperatives.
