1960s Gaza Co-Op Shift Dress (XS-S)

sold out

A 1960s Gaza co-op white shift dress featuring a mock turtleneck, back zipper closure, and soft pleating at the waist. Based on its materials and the exceptional quality of the embroidery, it is likely from the 1960s and worked on a fine white linen ground with beautiful blue DMC cotton thread. We love the Gaza qilada motif on the chest, along with cloves (kurunful) and protective amulets.

Pieces like this were produced in women run cooperatives, where Palestinian women generated income for their families through embroidery. These co-ops played a vital role in sustaining both livelihood and tradition, adapting tatreez into more contemporary silhouettes for Palestinians in diaspora. At the time, the traditional thobe was often seen as formal, so garments like this, along with purses and home textiles, offered a more modern way to wear and live with embroidery.

We are honored to share this piece of tatreez history with our community. A true collector’s item, it reflects the remarkable craftsmanship and high quality work produced through these cooperatives.
